Civil & Structural Engineer - Design Delivery

Nuclear Projects | Leading Engineering Consultancy | Outside IR35 | Long-term Contract | North West then Chester-based


The Opportunity

We're recruiting a Civil & Structural Engineer to deliver design work on nuclear and infrastructure projects. You'll work with a growing team of 150+ engineers and designers, contributing to projects across the full lifecycle - from concept studies through detailed design - with genuine variety and technical challenge.

Contract Details: Outside IR35 | Long-term contract | Competitive rate | 6 weeks based in North Wales, then full-time Chester-based | Expenses paid for working away

This is hands-on technical work with autonomy. You'll deliver small projects and design sub-tasks, prepare detailed design analysis and specifications, and communicate complex designs to BIM teams, other disciplines, and clients. 


What You'll Be Doing

Design, Leadership & Delivery

  • Deliver on small projects and sub-tasks from a technical perspective
  • Prepare preliminary and detailed design analysis for civil and structural works
  • Develop calculations, specifications, and technical documentation
  • Conduct feasibility studies and prepare reference designs
  • Deliver value engineering solutions that challenge cost and optimise performance
  • Prepare proposals and technical reports for clients

Design Communication

  • Communicate designs effectively to BIM teams
  • Liaise confidently with other engineering disciplines
  • Engage with construction teams on buildability and delivery
  • Present and defend designs authoritatively to clients
  • Prepare clear technical documentation

Structural Surveys & Site Engagement

  • Conduct structural condition surveys and assessments (core responsibility)
  • Initial 6-week placement based in North Wales on project delivery
  • Subsequently based in Chester with occasional site visits as required
  • Engage directly with clients on technical matters
  • Engage directly with clients on technical matters
  • Expenses covered for working away during initial North Wales period

About You

Essential Experience & Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Minimum 5+ years' civil and structural design experience
  • CRITICAL: Structural condition survey experience - This is essential. Proven, demonstrated track record conducting structural condition surveys and assessments. This is a key responsibility of the role.
  • Proven ability to:
    • Work independently with minimal supervision
    • Lead small projects and design sub-tasks
    • Prepare detailed design analysis and calculations
    • Communicate designs clearly to multi-disciplinary teams and clients
    • Challenge assumptions and deliver value-engineered solutions
  • BIM proficiency - comfortable communicating designs via BIM platforms
  • Professional qualifications such as CEng or IEng status (Desirable)

Advantageous

  • Previous nuclear industry project experience
  • Track record on infrastructure projects
  • Experience working across multiple disciplines

The Role in Practice

You'll work as part of a 150+ strong team covering a broad range of projects. Your day-to-day work combines structural condition surveys, design analysis, and specification preparation with client engagement and technical delivery. You'll lead smaller projects or sub-tasks autonomously, preparing feasibility studies, reference designs, and detailed specifications.

Working Pattern: Initially (6 weeks), you'll be based in North Wales supporting project delivery and conducting structural surveys. Subsequently, you'll be Chester-based with occasional site visits as required. Expenses are covered for the initial North Wales period.

You'll communicate with BIM teams, other disciplines, and clients to deliver integrated solutions. Your core responsibility will be conducting structural condition surveys and assessments - this is a critical part of your remit.

This is a role with real autonomy and technical responsibility whilst delivering hands-on design work.
